May Cup

Drinks

(or May Bowl, May Punch, May Wine)

There is a tradition of a mixed fruit and wine punch flavoured with spring herbs, particularily the sweet woodruff (Galium odoratum or Asperula Odorata), in Germany and parts of Switzerland associated with the May Day (or 'Beltane') festival. This has occasionally been seen as an English tradition too, though we find a reference to 'May Wine' as being made from fermented Haws (Western Morning News - Tuesday 02 September 1947, p6)
