Cumberland Rum Butter

Creamed cold sauce of butter with rum, Barbados sugar and spices. Served with puddings or oatcakes. (British Food Trust, etc).

There is a tradition of offering Rum Butter and oatcakes to visitors come to admire a new baby, token gifts of coins being stuck into the the empty butter bowl, to ensure a prosperous life for the newborn.
